    Friday, April 8, 2011 at 8:00pm - 10:00pm
    Charles Darwin University Theatre

The Darwin Symphony Orchestra, gaining increasing recognition as a cultural icon of tremendous vibrancy, brings to you yet another program of great classics - both timeless and profound. Presenting a double whammy of great musical artistry, DSO Concertmaster Katie Betts - flaunting her skills as both conductor and soloist – presents a concert of music inspired by landscape: the countryside, the people, and the traditions.

Captain Cook landed in Botany Bay in 1770, the same year as Beethoven’s birth. It is this event that inspired Peter Sculthorpe to write his Beethoven Variations, a work which brings together Sculthorpe’s own unique style, manipulating the Ode to Joy melody – known by every creature on this Earth - from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony across many variations. Sculthorpe depicts the early settlement of the Australian coast through the sounds of birdsong, while Beethoven’s Ode to Joy theme remains prominent throughout.

Beethoven’s magical 6th Symphony, also known as the Pastoral Symphony, was completed in 1808 and is one of his few works to contain explicitly programmatic content, expressing his love of nature and the beauty of the countryside. This work depicts five different scenes of country life and is one of his most beautiful and joyful works. From calm pastoral relaxation to menacing storms – what a memorable symphonic journey this will be.

And if that isn’t yet enough, this concert features Mozart’s beloved 5th Violin Concerto, the Turkish, directed and performed by DSO Concertmaster Katie Betts. This sparkling and lively concerto is not to be missed as Katie’s interpretation is certain to inspire and move even the most discerning audience!

Come and witness a concert of great music, great musicality, and great collaboration. The Darwin Symphony Orchestra is sure to leave you gasping for more, tantalizing your deep inner soul, and nurturing your musical spirit.

Don’t just be a part of the post concert gossip, be part of the action. (http://m2.facebook.com/events/214040618610474)
